A new backyard is only as good as what's in it. If someone you know just moved somewhere with outdoor space, the gifts that get used are grilling gear, decent lighting, and a place to sit that isn't a folding chair from the garage.

Shade matters too: a market umbrella, a sail shade, or a retractable awning is the difference between a patio that's usable at 2pm and one that isn't.

The small stuff that makes hosting easier

A rolling cart stocked with napkins, utensils, a bottle opener, and citronella candles keeps supplies in one place and easy to move. An outdoor rug defines a seating area and is easy to hose down.

Furniture covers, umbrella weights, and tie-downs protect against summer storms, and an outdoor storage box keeps cushions dry between uses. An outdoor sink station or portable hand-washing station makes cleanup less of a chore for whoever's hosting.
