Draw names for a group birthday gift

A group birthday gift tends to go wrong at the same point. Five friends in a chat, nobody says how much they want to spend, two of them buy the same book, and the person who said "leave it with me" has not done anything yet. Drawing names ends that. Each person is given one part of the gift, everyone knows the budget, and the birthday person gets one good thing instead of five small ones.

What the draw actually fixes

It works for a 40th, an office birthday, a grandmother's 80th or a group of friends who want to buy something the person really wants. No one person carries the whole cost, no two people buy the same thing, and together the group can afford a Dyson or a weekend away that none of them would have bought alone.

Agree the rules before you draw

Settle the amount first. Around ten a head is usual for a casual group of friends, and closer to fifty for a big birthday, but go with whatever suits the people in the chat. Then decide whether everything goes into one big gift or the group splits a few items from the list by price.

For a single birthday, write the parts on slips of paper and let everyone pull one in the pub. If the same friends buy for each other's birthdays all year, draw names online once instead. Each person gets one friend by email, with the budget and a link to that friend's wishlist, and takes charge of that friend's birthday gift, so nobody has to ask twice.

Let one person coordinate: place the orders, keep track of who has put in what, and watch the delivery. Give the job to whoever already keeps the group's holiday spreadsheet. Anyone else and you end up with a second group chat about the first one.

The birthday person should still make a list

Suggest they create a birthday wishlist before the draw. It does not spoil anything. They still find out on the day which of the items turned up, and the group stops guessing whether they would prefer the record player or the espresso machine.

A useful list has items at several prices, and that is what makes the draw work. The two people who pull the expensive item split it between them, someone else covers the book, and it all arrives together. A mix of practical things and things they would never buy for themselves works best.

Keep track of the money

Pick an order date about two weeks out and offer more than one way to pay: a bank transfer, a payment app, or cash for the aunt who trusts neither. Keep a simple sheet, or a separate chat for updates, that everyone taking part can see and the birthday person cannot. There is no need to chase anyone. Whoever wants to join will have done so by the order date.

Decide early whether the parcels go straight to the birthday person or to the coordinator for one handover. Both work, as long as the delivery date lines up with the birthday and not with the Tuesday after.

The handover

Have someone film it. A card saying who chipped in, or a photo of the whole group, adds more to the moment than the gift by itself. If the group bought several things, decide whether they all go in one basket or arrive one at a time through the day. The basket is easier, while the day-long version is more fun if someone is around to manage it.

Once the budget and the list are settled, you can draw names online in a couple of minutes and let the coordinator take it from there.
