Mother's Day gifts for the kind of mum you actually have

Some mothers would be thrilled with a €90 face cream. Others would return it and buy a hedge trimmer with the money. Both are mums. Both get a card in May. Buying the same thing for both of them is how one of them ends up with a scented candle again. Below are gift ideas by the kind of mother you actually have, and one way to stop guessing altogether.

The mum who likes nice things

If she notices the difference between good and expensive, buy her the thing she would never buy herself. A skincare set from La Mer or SK-II, a cashmere scarf, silk pyjamas. Jewellery works when it is small and classic: a thin gold chain, pearl earrings, a watch she can wear for twenty years. If she prefers doing to owning, a day at a spa, a wine tasting or a weekend in a hotel with a proper breakfast beats another box on the dresser.

The practical, organised mum

This is the mother who wants the household to run and is quietly annoyed by anything that does not. A good paper planner keeps the family calendar and her own plans on one page. An air fryer, an Instant Pot or a proper coffee machine gets used every single day, which is the only test that matters to her. Noise-cancelling headphones, a charging station for the kitchen counter and a handbag with enough compartments all pass. So do storage baskets and drawer organisers, which sound dull and get more use than any of the luxury gifts above.

The creative mum

Buy for the hobby she already has, in the quality she would not pay for herself: the good Winsor & Newton paints, the merino yarn, the scrapbooking paper she keeps looking at. A pottery course or a painting weekend says you take her creative time seriously. A monthly craft box keeps it going after May. And a small upgrade to the corner where she works, a daylight lamp, a set of drawers, a chair that does not hurt her back, improves every hour she spends there.

The mum who looks after herself

A thick yoga mat, resistance bands or a fitness tracker fit straight into the routine she already has. For winding down, a diffuser, a year of a meditation app or a massage gun. Good vitamins, herbal teas and an organic skincare set suit the habits she keeps anyway. A gym membership, a block of ten pilates classes or new walking shoes tell her to keep doing what she loves, which is the nicest thing a gift can say.

The mum who is short of time

The working mother with two children and a commute does not want more objects. A coffee subscription or a tin of good tea adds a small comfort to a packed morning. A month of meal boxes or a grocery delivery subscription takes one job off the list. A leather laptop bag or a decent desk chair helps at work. And a cleaner for three months, babysitting vouchers or a few hours of a personal shopper give her an afternoon to herself, which nothing else on this list manages.

Stop guessing and ask her

Better than sorting her into a type is asking her to create a wishlist with the things she actually wants and needs. Most mothers say "nothing", then fill it in within the hour once the link is in front of them. It also lets the rest of the family see what has been reserved, so the hedge trimmer and the face cream both arrive, once each.
