Start with your child's wishlist for last-minute Easter gifts

It is the Thursday before Easter, the eggs are bought, and you are standing in a toy shop with no idea what else goes in the basket. If your child keeps a wishlist, you already have the answer in your pocket. Open it before you pick up another plastic chick.

The list is a record of what they want right now

A child's wishlist is the opposite of guessing. It has the exact Lego set, the specific dinosaur book, the pens in the colours they saw at a friend's house. A seven-year-old's list will say "the blue one" with a link, and the blue one turns out to be a cheap water pistol. Nobody would have bought that from imagination alone, and it ends up being the best thing in the basket.

What children put on their lists in spring

Art supplies never leave: felt-tips, a watercolour set, a craft kit with too much glitter. Outdoor things arrive the moment the weather turns, so you see skipping ropes, frisbees, pavement chalk and small gardening sets appear in March. Books show up as specific titles, which makes them the easiest Easter gift on the list. Board games and puzzles are on nearly every list.

Do not skip the small items. A special pen, a sheet of stickers or a tiny figure often means more to a child than the bigger present you spent an hour choosing. They asked for it, which is the whole point.

Shop the list with a plan

Read the whole list, then pick one cheap basket filler and one bigger present. Give extra weight to whatever was added most recently. The dinosaur book from last week is a safer bet than the art set from October, because a child's interests move fast. Anything outdoor or springlike also gets more useful as the weather improves.

If your child does not have a list yet, Easter is a good reason to start one. You can create a wishlist together on the sofa and call it planning for their birthday, while you quietly take notes for Sunday.

Wishlist gifts make the basket feel personal

A child who finds a wishlist item in the basket reacts differently from one who finds a random purchase. It tells them someone was paying attention. Put the requested book next to the chocolate eggs, or tuck the small toy in beside the plush rabbit, and you keep the tradition while giving them something they actually asked for.

With two or three children, the lists also help you keep the baskets even. Every parent knows the sibling who counts the other one's eggs. If both baskets have one wished-for item and roughly the same value, there is nothing to count.

The same list works for the rest of the year

The list that solves Easter solves the birthday in July and Christmas after that. Have your children go through it every few months and take off what they no longer care about. It teaches them the difference between something they want and something they wanted for a week. Share it with grandparents, aunts and uncles too, since they are the ones most likely to buy a puzzle for a four-year-old that says "ages 8 and up" on the box.

There is still time before Sunday. If the list exists, shop from it tonight. If it does not, you can create one in a few minutes and know exactly what goes in the basket.
