Secret Santa works in March too

Picture a book club doing a Secret Santa in April. Twelve people, a 15 euro limit, one rule: the gift has to be a book you think the other person would never pick up on their own. It turns into the best evening the club has had in years, and nobody once mentions Christmas.

Anonymous gift draws get filed under December, next to the office party and the mince pies. They work just as well in any other month. Some occasions suit them better than Christmas does.

The office needs it more in February than in December

December is already crowded with drinks, dinners and days off. The months where morale actually sags are the ones with nothing in them: late February, the long stretch after the summer holidays, the week after a big project ships. A draw then costs almost nothing and gives people something to talk about at the coffee machine that is not the project.

Tie it to a milestone if you want, the end of a quarter or the day the new system goes live. Or do it for no reason at all. A gift on a random Tuesday in March lands harder than one everyone saw coming.

Birthdays, baby showers and hen weekends

At a fortieth, everyone brings something for the birthday person and the birthday person spends the evening saying thank you. Add a draw where every guest also brings a small gift for one other guest and the whole evening changes shape. People arrive curious instead of dutiful.

Baby showers and hen parties work the same way. The registry covers the practical things; the draw pushes people towards something personal for the person they pulled. And when you draw names online the draw is fair. Nobody ends up with their own name, nobody rigs it, and the awkwardness of school friends versus work friends buying for the same person disappears.

Big family weekends without the spending arms race

Anyone with a large family knows the problem. One aunt spends 60 euros per child, another spends 15, and both notice. A draw with a set budget flattens that. Everyone gets one gift, everyone spends the same, and nobody has to buy for fourteen people.

A summer week in a rented house, a family reunion, even a family video call in the depths of January all get more interesting with a mystery in them. Children in particular love guessing who drew their name. Expect the grandfather to be interrogated over an entire dinner.

Book clubs, running groups and friends in other cities

Any group that meets regularly can run a draw once or twice a year. A book club, the Tuesday five-a-side team, the parents from the school gate. The budget can be tiny. A book you loved, a jar of jam you made, something that shows you listened when the other person talked about their allotment.

Friends spread across cities or countries get the most out of it. A draw gives everyone a reason to send a parcel and a reason to wait for one. Two sisters, one in Lyon and one in Copenhagen, can run one every spring, and the parcel that turns up in May does more than any message sent in between.

How to run one that goes well

Set a budget that fits the group: 10 euros for the running club, 30 for close family. Pick a firm date for the exchange and say it in the first message. Give people a theme or a hint, "something for their garden", "a book they would never choose", so the gifts have some point to them.

Let the tool do the admin. Everyone gets their name by email with the budget included, and each person can put a short wishlist next to their name, so the organiser is not chasing spreadsheets the week before. Match the theme to the season if it helps: picnic kit in June, something for a new hobby in January.

Next time a group of yours needs a lift, whatever the month, organise a Secret Santa, set the budget, put the date in the description, and let the emails go out. The name is the only part of it that belongs to December.
