What to put on a graduation wishlist

Graduation gifts are harder than they look. A diploma frame and a €50 voucher cover the occasion without covering the person. The graduate is about to start a job, move into a flat with a bare kitchen, or leave for a master's in another city, and each of those needs different things. A wishlist tells the family which one applies, so the money goes on a decent blazer and a set of pans and stays off the third frame.

Gifts for the job you are about to start

Work clothes remain one of the most useful graduation gifts there is. A blazer that fits properly, a pair of leather shoes that can be resoled, or a plain watch matter more during interview season than anything else on the list. Put the sizes on the list; a blazer in the wrong size is a return trip nobody makes.

Then the tech: a laptop bag that does not look like a student's, headphones with a good microphone for video calls, a power bank. If it is a first proper desk, a planner, a small lamp and a monitor stand turn the corner of a bedroom into a place you can work from.

Gifts for the flat you are about to fill

Graduation often lands in the same month as moving out. A chef's knife and a paring knife cover the kitchen better than a block of nine. Add a frying pan that will outlive the flat, a Moccamaster or a good French press, and a set of storage jars. For the bedroom, bed linen and pillows you chose beat whatever came with the student room.

Small appliances belong on the list too. An air fryer, a stick blender or a rice cooker makes it possible to eat something other than takeaway during the months when the hours are long and the salary has not caught up.

Gifts that have nothing to do with the job

Formal education ends; reading does not need to. A biography of someone in the field, a personal finance book that explains what a pension actually is, or a year of a language app all keep paying off after the ceremony.

Leave room for things with no career angle at all. Watercolours, a second-hand guitar, climbing shoes, a sourdough starter kit. Those gifts tell the graduate that the family sees a person, and the job title is a small part of it.

Experiences to put on the list

Some of the best graduation gifts never get unwrapped. A contribution towards a trip before the job starts, a decent suitcase, or an Interrail pass suits anyone planning to see a bit of Europe before the calendar fills up.

Closer to home, a voucher for a good restaurant, concert tickets or a gym or museum membership helps a graduate settle into a new city and meet people there. For many, these matter more a year later than another object would.

The things you keep for years

Practical gifts solve this year's problems. A few gifts outlast them. A ring or a chain with the graduation date engraved, a photo album put together by a parent, a leather notebook with a name on the cover. A plant that grows with you does the same job for less.

The gifts that turn out to matter most are often the simplest: a handwritten letter from a grandparent, a box of photos from the student years, a watch that belonged to someone in the family, handed on to mark the step into adult life.

Write it all down before the gifts start arriving, and be specific about the sizes, the brands and the trip. You can create a wishlist in a few minutes and share the link with the family, who are asking anyway.
