How to organise a housewarming group gift with friends

Eight friends turning up to a housewarming with eight separate gifts produces a shelf of candles, three bottles of wine and a plant that dies by October. The same eight friends putting €25 each into one gift produces a €200 coffee machine that runs every morning for a decade. The second version needs someone to organise it, and that someone is apparently you.

Set up the group first

Start with the people who would obviously join: the friend group, the siblings, the colleagues who already know about the move. A group chat is fine for the first message. Decide early whether the gift is a surprise or whether the new owners get a say, because that changes everything that follows.

Give a rough idea of what people usually put in, so nobody has to guess. Between €15 and €30 is the usual range; some will give more, a student cousin will give less, and nobody should be made to feel that. Including everyone matters more than getting the maths even.

What to actually buy

Group gifts work best on the things people want and never buy for themselves because of the price. Think of:

• A serious kitchen appliance: a KitchenAid mixer, a Sage espresso machine, a Thermomix if the group is generous
• Something for the house that a solo gift never covers: a full set of good bed linen, a Le Creuset pot, a robot vacuum
• A voucher for a restaurant they cannot yet afford in the new neighbourhood, or a DIY store card for the first hundred small jobs
• A personalised piece: a print of the house from a local illustrator, a house number in enamel, an engraved chopping board

If nobody in the group knows what the couple needs, ask them a few questions about the place, or suggest they create a wishlist for the house. On Happy Giftlist an expensive item can be marked so several people contribute to it, which is exactly the group gift problem solved in one link.

Running the collection

Put one person in charge of collecting the money, placing the order and sorting the delivery. Splitting those three jobs between three people is how a contribution gets lost and a gift arrives twice. A bank transfer or a payment app is enough for everyone to send their share.

Keep a note of who has joined and close the collection one to two weeks before the party, so there is time to order. A pinned message in the group chat with the running total shows where things stand, so the organiser does not have to message people one by one, and anyone who would rather not join can let it pass without explaining.

Presenting the gift

A card signed by everyone who contributed makes it clear the gift comes from the whole group, whoever happens to be carrying the box. If it is a surprise, check the timing with the partner or a family member so you do not walk in halfway through the unpacking of the kitchen.

For a large item that ships separately, hand over a photo of it at the party and let the real thing arrive the following week. The surprise stays intact, and the couple gets time to work out where it goes.

Take photos when you hand it over. Those are what people keep.

If the group would sooner give time than objects

Some of the better housewarming gifts are things nobody can drop or break. A few that work:

• A "services voucher" book where each friend offers a skill: a Saturday of painting, a garden tidy, a shelf hung straight
• A binder of the group's favourite recipes, with a box of the harder-to-find ingredients
• A neighbourhood welcome pack with the best bakery, the good pizza place and a card for each
• A plant fund, so the new owners can fill the windowsills with things they chose

Whatever the group settles on, the fastest way to avoid guessing is to have the couple write it down. Ask them to create a wishlist and share it with the group, then pick the one item everyone can get behind.
