What teenagers actually want for their birthday

My nephew was into skateboarding for exactly eleven weeks. His birthday fell in week twelve. The board is in the garage, and the lesson is that buying for a teenager is harder than buying for anyone else in the family. Their interests turn over monthly, their friends matter more than you, and their taste is far more specific than it looks from outside.

Tech and games are still the first request

Ask most teenagers and the answer starts with a screen. A wireless gaming headset, a mechanical keyboard, the game that comes out the week of the birthday. Phone accessories are less glamorous and get used every day: a decent case, a power bank, a pair of earbuds to replace the ones that went through the wash.

A year of Spotify Premium or a games subscription keeps working long after the cake. For the ones who make things, a drawing tablet, a ring light for filming, or proper editing software supports what they are already doing at midnight in their room. That is the gift that gets used.

For clothes, hand over the choice

Teenagers dress for their friends, and what their friends approve of changes between the invitation and the party. A voucher for the shop they actually go to beats a hoodie you chose, however nice the hoodie. My sister learned this with a jacket that was "so last year" three weeks after she bought it.

Jewellery, a watch or a bag avoid the size problem entirely. Skincare from the brand they keep mentioning goes down well with the ones who have started taking twenty minutes in the bathroom. And brand names matter more at fifteen than at forty; the label is doing social work you do not see.

Something to do with their friends

Tickets to a gig, a day at a theme park, or a voucher for the escape room, the bowling alley or the cinema give a teenager the thing they want most, which is a plan with their friends that an adult has paid for. Buy two tickets, not one.

If it fits something they already do, a photography workshop, a cooking class or an art session works. For the older ones, driving lessons are the gift that says you take them seriously. Go-karting, climbing or a day of paddleboarding covers the ones who need a bit of adrenaline.

Gifts that show you noticed

The gift that lands is the one tied to the thing they are into this month. Proper Copic markers and a good sketchbook for the one who draws. A new pair of boots or the club's away shirt for the footballer. The latest Leigh Bardugo in hardback, or a nice edition of something they read at school and secretly liked, for the reader. Guitar strings, a record, a cheap microphone for the one who is always making noise.

Pay attention to what they say in passing at dinner and what turns up on their Instagram, rather than what a teenager is supposed to like.

Cash is not lazy

Parents worry that money looks like they could not be bothered. Most teenagers see it differently. At sixteen, being trusted to choose is the point, and 50 euros they can spend how they like feels bigger than 50 euros of something almost right. A voucher for the shop, the restaurant or the game store does the same job with a bit more shape to it.

If a note in a card feels too bare, fold it into something small: a box of their favourite sweets, a pair of socks in the colour they always wear. The money is the gift; the rest is wrapping.

The reliable method is to ask

Most teenagers would much rather be asked than surprised with something that misses. Asking does not spoil it. It shows you take their taste seriously, which at that age is rarer than a present.

Get them to create a birthday wishlist a few weeks before, and share the link with grandparents and aunts. Everyone buys something they actually want, nobody buys the same thing twice, and the skateboard stays in the shop.
