What to put on an autumn birthday wishlist

A birthday in October or November falls in jumper weather, with the first dark evenings and the first walk that needs a hat. That makes it the easiest birthday of the year to write a list for, because the season does half the work. These are the things that actually get used, and the ones that only look the part.

Home gifts that make the house feel warmer

One wool blanket beats three chunky knits. Put a real one on the list, from Silkeborg or Tweedmill. It will be on the sofa every evening from the birthday until April, and still there in ten years. The acrylic throw in burnt orange gets folded and forgotten.

A candle is the obvious small gift, so make it a good one and name it on the list: a Skandinavisk or a Diptyque in one scent, cinnamon or woodsmoke. Three cheap pumpkin-spice candles make the house smell like a shop in October. For the tea drinker, a tin of Kusmi's spiced blend and a large mug. For the coffee drinker, a bag from the local roaster and a Bialetti if they do not own one yet.

Wardrobe updates for the season

A scarf is the classic autumn birthday present, and the wool decides whether it is a good one. A lambswool scarf from Johnstons of Elgin or a merino one from a good outdoor brand gets worn every day for years. The polyester one from the station gets worn twice.

Boots are the bigger item and the one to get exactly right, so put the model and the size on the list. Blundstones for everyday, Meindl or Lowa for someone who actually walks in the hills, Dr. Martens for the person who has wanted a pair since they were sixteen. A merino beanie and leather gloves fill the gap for friends with a smaller budget.

Gear for getting outside

This season is worth walking in, and the right gear decides whether anyone does. A Stanley thermos (the 0.75 litre classic) keeps coffee hot for a whole afternoon in the woods, and a picnic blanket with a waterproof back makes sitting on wet ground bearable. A pack of two Falke TK2 walking socks is the small gift that gets more thanks than it should.

For someone who has just started hiking, a proper rain jacket is the thing they will not buy themselves: a Patagonia Torrentshell or a Rab, in a colour they chose. Skip the camera accessories and the photography course unless they already own a camera, because their phone is doing that job.

Self-care for shorter days

Cold air and central heating dry the skin, so the richer creams deserve a place on the list. Weleda Skin Food is the cheap one everyone ends up using, and a bath oil is a small luxury for a dark Sunday evening. Give one product and name it. A gift set with six things in it leaves five of them at the back of the cupboard.

The aroma diffuser shows up on every list and is switched off in every home by January. A book is a better bet for the evenings, like a good novel from this year's prize lists or the Macfarlane the person keeps saying they want to read.

Building the list

Mix the practical things (boots, socks, the rain jacket) with two or three treats, and spread the prices so the colleague with a small budget and the parents who want to spend more both have something to pick. Write the colour, the size and the model next to each item. With "a scarf", the giver has to guess. With "Johnstons of Elgin lambswool, dark green", they know exactly what to buy.

Put the boots on with the exact size, and friends who want to can club together for them. You can create a birthday wishlist in a few minutes and share the link with the people who want to get it right the first time.
