Couples marrying this year usually already live together. They own plates. What they want from a registry is the stuff they would buy anyway if the money were there, plus a few things they would never quite get round to.

The green items are no longer the quirky ones

Five years ago a beeswax wrap on a registry made the aunts raise an eyebrow. Now it sits next to the toaster and nobody blinks. Bamboo utensils, a good insulated water bottle, organic cotton bedding, a fridge with a decent energy label: these are ordinary requests on the lists you see now.

The surprising one is the indoor herb garden. It turns up on more and more registries, and in most kitchens the basil is dead within a month, so treat it as a hobby item and put it below the bedding. Compost bins for the kitchen counter show up too. They are cheap, they get used every day, and the couple gets a small shared project out of it.

Smart home gear is the new blender

A robot vacuum used to be the extravagant item on a list. Now it is the item the parents-in-law buy without being asked. Video doorbells, a smart thermostat, bulbs you can dim from the sofa, an air fryer that talks to your phone: all of it appears on registries as ordinary household equipment.

A few couples go further and ask for a year of a home security subscription. Fair enough. The first shared flat is often the first place either of them has been responsible for, and a camera over the front door costs less than the nerves.

More couples are asking for experiences than for objects

This is the clearest change from a few years ago. Cooking classes, a wine tasting, a voucher for a weekend in the Ardennes, a pottery course for two. Guests seem to like giving these more than they like giving glassware, and the couple gets a Saturday out of it instead of a cupboard problem.

Subscriptions have moved past the meal-kit phase. On recent lists you see a monthly coffee delivery from a local roaster, a book subscription, a year of a streaming service and a date-night box that arrives every month. The appeal is obvious: the gift keeps turning up long after the thank-you cards are written.

If you go this route, be specific. "A nice dinner out" gets you a vague voucher. "Dinner for two at the Italian place on the corner" gets you dinner.

Furniture that folds, stacks or hides something

Most couples marrying now are starting out in a flat that is smaller than they would like. Their registries reflect it. A storage bench that doubles as seating, a dining table that extends for the six people who come round twice a year, shelving that can be rebuilt when they move.

The same logic runs through the kitchen and the spare corner. Stackable pans, a compact air fryer, a folding exercise bike, a proper desk chair because one of them still works from home three days a week. None of it is glamorous, and all of it gets used.

Wellness gear that gets used

The wellness requests on registries look like a shopping list, with none of the spa brochure about them. A good blender for the smoothie habit, an air purifier for the flat next to the ring road, a weighted blanket, a massage gun after a marathon of Ikea assembly. Meditation cushions and oil diffusers turn up too, but usually below the blender.

Pick the two or three of these you will actually use in the first month and skip the rest. A registry full of aspirational wellness gear ends up in a wardrobe by the first anniversary.
